Media: Dictionary & Voice Style

Add your company's terms and acronyms to a new pronunciation Dictionary, and adjust the speed, pitch, and volume of text-to-speech voices on individual tutorials. Both features are in Beta.

What's New

Text-to-speech voices sometimes stumble on product names and acronyms, or come out too quiet or too fast for your audience. Now you can make the adjustment once and have it apply. Teach iorad how to pronounce a word in the new Dictionary, and fine-tune how a voice sounds with Voice Style.

1. We've expanded our Media settings options. Let's check them out now.

Click on the 3 dot menu

2. Click Media

3. Click Media Settings

4. Choose to Require media completion or Mute media by default.

Require media completion prevents the user from advancing to the next step before the media finishes. Mute media starts the tutorial muted. The learner can choose to unmute it.

5. Click Dictionary.

Note this dictionary feature & the voice style feature are new & in beta. Please reach out with feedback as we work to improve the functionality.

6. To add words to your account dictionary, Click Add.

7. For this example, Type in the word live.

8. Type in lɪv for this example.

For your own words, you can copy & paste the phonetic spelling from dictionary.com or an online phonetic generator.

9. Click Add

10. Now, you can play it to see if it sounds right.

11. If you need to make any adjustments, click edit.

12. Make your adjustments here and then click the checkmark or x to cancel.

13. Let's check out our last option - Click Voice Style. These voice settings apply only to this tutorial.

14. Here you can adjust the speed, pitch and volume of the voice and upon newly generated steps audio it will apply.
This only applies to media generated using text to speech voices.

Where to find it

Open a tutorial's 3 dot menu, click Media, then Media Settings. Choose Dictionary to add pronunciations, or Voice Style to adjust the voice. Walk through it in the tutorial above.

What you can do

  • Fix mispronounced terms
    Add a word or phrase along with its IPA phonetic spelling. You can copy phonetic spellings from dictionary.com or an online phonetic generator.
  • Set it once
    Words you add go into your account dictionary, so you don't have to correct the same term tutorial after tutorial.
  • Preview and edit
    Play a word back to check how it sounds, then edit it until it's right.
  • Tune the voice
    Adjust speed, pitch, and volume for a tutorial, whether a voice reads too quickly or always sounds quiet.

Good to know

  • Dictionary and Voice Style are in Beta. Reach out with feedback as we keep improving them.
  • Both features currently work only with English (US) text-to-speech voices that support SSML.
  • Voice Style settings apply to the current tutorial only, not your whole account.
  • Voice Style changes apply to step audio generated after you make them, and only to text-to-speech audio, not pre-recorded media.
